Niger, located in Western Africa, is officially known as the Republic of Niger and it is a landlocked nation. Niger's economy is based on agriculture and most of the population earns its livelihood from farming. Chief crops of the country are cotton, peanuts, cowpeas, millet, sorghum, cassava and rice. Livestock are raised including sheep, cattle, goats, camels, horses, donkeys and poultry. The country has one of the largest deposits of uranium in the world. Some low-grade deposits are iron ore, gypsum, natron, phosphates, coal and salt. Main industries are uranium mining, food processing, cement, brick, soap, textiles, chemicals and slaughterhouses. |
